This presentation will deal with different aspects of the interactions between some Chinese influenced border regions and the “outer world”, mainly with the activities of the Spanish and Dutch during the 17th century at the island of Taiwan (Formosa with its European name) and the Portuguese in Macao. The activities of these European powers in Asia where heavily influenced by the political and economic ups and downs in Europe. Furthermore, they show that East Asia started to become integrated in the processes of globalization not only by the contacts with Central Asia, but also on the ways by the seas.
