Abstract

How have modern Chinese governments translated their messages and ideas into the language of their Uyghur subjects? In 2019 a team of researchers began a pilot project, funded by Hong Kong Baptist University, to study the history of modern Chinese official translations into Turki and Uyghur. The main outcome of the project is the Historical Uyghur-Chinese Corpus, a collection of 200 paired documents translated from Chinese into Turki or Uyghur since the late Qing era up to the present day. The corpus allows
online access to these documents and online searches that will enable users to trace changes in the translation of different terms and concepts over time. In the presentation, the project team will introduce the corpus, demonstrate how to use it, and show ways in which it can be mined by researchers.
