Abstract
In a country where a great number of people are either unemployed or forced to seek employment abroad, the influx of Chinese migrant workers has created a backlash of anti-Chinese sentiment among many Filipinos. Adding insult to injury, some weeks ago, a Chinese trawler allegedly rammed into a Filipino fishing boat on the evening of June 9th (Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day). Caught in this geopolitical crossfire are the Filipino-Chinese or Tsinoys, who are becoming the target of the anti-China chorus even as they recognize and claim loyalty to the Philippines as their mother country. This paper explores some of the narratives, both recent and in the past, of Tsinoys who live and negotiate between two cultures, and struggle to represent their identity to the Filipino community.
