Abstract:

The lecture provides a basic understanding of Vietnamese migration to Taiwan that attempts to analyse and explain various phenomena such as push and pull factors shaping Vietnamese migration to Taiwan; decision process leading to the migration; historical trajectory of Vietnamese migration to Taiwan; brokerage agents that dominate the process of Vietnamese migration to Taiwan; or living and working conditions of Vietnamese people in the country. Also, reactions of local people to the Vietnamese migration and its impacts on the Taiwanese society and job market are explained.

The lecture shows that Vietnamese diaspora living in Taiwan consists mainly of three main social groups: migrant workers, Vietnamese spouses and students. At the same time, Vietnamese migration is depicted as (more or less) self-feeding industry producing ethno-cultural prejudices, social inequalities and various forms of illegalities.

Bio:

Filip Kraus, PhD. is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Asia-Pacific Area Studies; RCHSS; Academia Sinica, Taiwan (ROC). He obtained his doctoral degree at the Graduate Institute for Social Research and Cultural Studies, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. His research interests include: Social and Cultural Anthropology of Vietnamese Society; Vietnamese Literature; Western Critical Philosophy; Postcolonial Studies in Contemporary Southeast Asia; Vietnamese Migration and International Relations in the Southeast Asia. He has published on these issues number of books, articles and lectures. Most notably, he is a co-author of two monographies – “Bosses, Soldiers, and Rice Grains; Vietnamese Crime Networks in the Czech Republic and their International Dimension” (2012) and “Vietnamese Crime Networks in the Czech Republic” (2009)
